Lunar Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) Stratigraphy and Structure with Depth: Evidence for Significantly Decreased Th Concentrations and Thermal Evolution Consequences

چکیده
Dating from the lunar magma ocean solidification period, Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) occupies 16% of surface but has a much higher thorium abundance compared to rest Moon and is thus interpreted carry 40% radioactive elements by volume in form an anomalously thick KREEP-rich layer. Subsequent research focused on processes responsible for PKT concentration localization (e.g., degree-1 convection, farside impact basin effects, etc.), effect high-radioactivity thermal evolution topography relaxation, mantle heating, late-stage mare basalt generation, etc.). Here we use stratigraphic approach new crustal thickness data probe nature with depth. We find that most characteristics can be explained sequential cratering events excavated redistributed surface/near-surface thinner Th-rich layer at depth, implying no anomalous conditions thickness, abundances, geodynamics, effects or generation are likely required as previous studies.

Introduction: This abstract is concerned with the probability that a mission to a site within the South Pole-Aitken basin (SPA) would yield a meaningful sample of typical SPA floor material. The probability seems favorable, barring a highly atypical landing site, because the chemical composition of the SPA interior, as determined remotely from orbit, is different from that of the surrounding lu...

Introduction: In understanding the evolution of the Moon, a number of its fundamental magmatic characteristics must be explained in the context of other geophysical and geological observations. Volcanic activity subsequent to the formation of anorthositic crust was dominated by the eruption of mare basalt. (1) The main phase of mare volcanism began ~500 Myr after the crystallization of the anor...

The Moon is lopsided. The fi rst images of the farside of the Moon, taken by the Luna 3 spacecraft in October 1959, showed far fewer dark maria than on the familiar Earthfacing hemisphere. The crust is thicker on the farside than on the nearside (e.g. Neumann et al. 1996), and post-Apollo orbital remote sensing data show dramatic chemical differences between hemispheres (FIG. 1). Jolliff et al....

The basalts within Oceanus Procellarum have been named the Oceanus Procellarum Group and subdivided into four major geologic units on the basis of morphology, spectral reflectance, and other remote sensing information in order to develop a framework of regional stratigraphy for the largest lunar mare. The oldest mare basalt unit identified, the Repsold Formation (blue color, low albedo, high cr...
